An ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in Agra, the Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, it is the jewel of Muslim art in India.
